Truffle Tree - as seen on BBC2: Oak Tree with Summer Burgundy Truffles
As featured on BBC2's "The Trees that Made Britain", a Truffle Tree is the ultimate unusual luxury gift that will keep producing year after year, ideal for the ‘foodie’ or gardening enthusiast. The exquisite Summer, or Burgundy Truffle (tuber aestivum/uncinatum) is a native species in the UK and is greatly valued for its powerful aroma in cookery. (In 2004/5, the average price in European markets for the Burgundy truffle was £280 per kilo!) The truffles live in symbiotic contact with the roots of a tree, most often an oak, but also with the common hazel.
The one year old whips (30-45cm high) come with their roots inoculated with the highly prized and unusual summer truffle. Once inoculated, the root systems are carefully monitored to ensure that at point of sale, the seedlings are truly infected and to the exclusion of any harmful pathogens or competing fungi. They come with full planting instructions, and require alkaline conditions (over chalk or limestone). The truffles, which tend to be roughly spherical, have no stalk, no gills and are formed underground or just at the surface, will be ready for harvesting in approximately 4 - 5 years. Spring is the optimal planting time, as the truffles grow over the summer, and are harvested between late November and early February.
Please remember that during the winter months the saplings that are sent out will not have any leaves on them!
