The perfect and original gift. The Italian Alder (alnus cordata) is not a British native but it has glossy dark green leaves, prolific catkins & fruit, a lovely shape & good growth speed. It is happy in infertile soils, and thrives in the cold & wet (sounds like Britain!). Alders need full sunlight and will not tolerate shade and this one is happy on dryer soils and even thrives on chalk. It is a medium sized tree, reaching 20m (65ft) at maturity.
