Glucosamine is a glycoprotein which forms part of the glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) which are involved in maintaining the proper integrity of cartilage and the movement of joints. Taking 1500mg in one tablet has been supported by numerous studies, as an effective way of maintaining joint and connective tissue health. People who suffer from stiff joints, arthritis or those who take strenuous exercise commonly take Glucosamine Sulphate. Orally, glucosamine sulfate is used for osteoarthritis When used orally and appropriately, glucosamine has been used safely in multiple clinical trials lasting from 4 weeks to 3 years. There is insufficient evidence for use during pregnancy. Glucosamine is a glycoprotein derived from marine exoskeletons or produced synthetically. It is required for the synthesis of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosaminoglycans, also known as mucopolysaccharides, which comprise the body's tendons, ligaments, cartilage, synovial fluid, mucus membranes, and structures in the eye, blood vessels, and heart valves. Glucosamine stimulates metabolism of chondrocytes in articular cartilage and synoviocytes in synovial tissue. Glucosamine sulfate is 90% absorbed after oral administration. Oral glucosamine might be better tolerated than the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because its mode of action seems to target the pathogenic mechanisms of osteoarthritis rather than affecting cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and adverse gastrointestinal effects of NSAIDs Suggested intake For osteoarthritis, the typical dose is 500 mg three times daily. However, 1500 mg once daily has also been used.
